Pelhams können wahlweise mit einem oder zwei Zügelpaaren verwendet werden, wodurch sich mehrere Verschnallmöglichkeiten ergeben.
Sind die Zügel im Trensenring eingeschnallt, wirkt das Pelham nur auf Zug auf die Zunge und die unteren Laden. Wenn Pferde dazu neigen, den Kopf hochzureißen, ist es sinnvoll, einen Zügel im Ring am Unterbaum einzuschnallen, weil dann Druck auf das Genick ausgeübt wird. Diesem Druck versucht das Pferd auszuweichen, indem es den Kopf senkt. Damit das Pferd nicht zu tief kommt soll bei maximal 45° (Unterbaum zur Maulspalte) die Kinnkette wirken.
